Ask an adult what they remember from school, and they rarely recite a worksheet. They remember the frog they dissected, the play they performed, the cathedral they walked into, the experiment that didn't go as planned. The lesson that stuck was almost always the one they experienced. That is not an accident of personality or nostalgia — it is how God wired the human brain. And it is one of the deepest reasons we teach the way we do.

The brain is built for novelty

Neuroscientists have mapped a specific circuit that turns new experiences into lasting memory. When you encounter something genuinely new, a memory hub called the hippocampus flags it as novel and signals a small, dopamine-producing region deep in the brain — the substantia nigra/ventral tegmental area. That region answers back with a release of dopamine into the hippocampus, which strengthens the brain's ability to form and keep the memory. Researchers John Lisman and Anthony Grace named this the "hippocampal–VTA loop," and brain-imaging studies by Emrah Düzel, Nico Bunzeck, and their colleagues showed it at work: the brain's reward and memory centers light up together in response to novelty, and that surge measurably improves what we remember.

The effect is striking enough that novelty even helps us remember ordinary things nearby. In one study, simply exploring a new environment beforehand improved how many unrelated words people could later recall. Newness doesn't just make the new thing memorable — it briefly turns up the brain's whole capacity to learn.

This is why a first visit to a place feels so vivid, and why the tenth visit fades into routine. When everything is new, the brain pays attention. When it has seen it all before, the novelty signal quiets, and so does the memory it would have formed.

Wonder, emotion, and doing

Novelty is the spark, but two things pour fuel on it. The first is emotion: the amygdala tags experiences that move us — awe, delight, even healthy struggle — as worth keeping, telling the memory system to hold on tight. The second is active engagement. When students do something rather than merely watch it, they recruit far more of the brain at once — spatial systems for navigating, motor systems for building, language systems for explaining. A memory woven from many threads is far harder to lose than a single line of text read once and forgotten.

Put those together — novelty, wonder, and active doing — and you have the most reliable recipe for learning that lasts. It is also, not coincidentally, a fair description of how children are meant to flourish.

Why we leave the classroom

It is also why we refuse to keep learning inside four walls. The most powerful classroom we have is often the world itself — a working mill, a museum gallery, a tide pool, a Revolutionary street — where novelty, wonder, and active doing all arrive at once. That is the reason a first encounter with the real thing stays with a child long after the worksheet is forgotten. We are, all of us, made to wonder.
